Commemoration Recital November 2018
The Bridge Singers of Felton and Thirston in Northumberland performed a recital to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1 in St. Michael's Church, Felton on 10th November 2018. The first half was solemn, increasingly so in fact with songs and readings of goodbyes, injury and death but the 2nd half was more optimistic exploring themes of hope, peace and joy as the war ended. Here is a selection of snippets from the recital. The photos are by Michael Camm.
In 2017 we sang in Alnwick at Last Night Of The Proms, in Felton and Longframlington for our fruity Christmas Concerts and into 2018 at our Burns Night Celebration, at Brinkburn Priory for a wedding and recital, at Feltonbury and a few times in between. We work hard and have lots of fun as you can see and hear. The extracts of music you hear are from Tihore Mai by Hirini Melbourne, Bogoroditse Devo by Sergei Rachmaninov, Till Autumn Comes by Gary Steward, Red, Red Rose by Cheryl Camm, Now Westlin Winds which is a traditional Scottish song with lyrics by Robert Burns, Come Again by John Dowland and Abendlied by Josef Rheinberger.
Burns Night Celebration
Only a month after Christmas, The Bridge Singers put on another concert, full of new repertoire, for Burns Night on 25th January 2018. There were many of Cheryl’s arrangements of Robert Burns’ songs in the concert as well as a couple of her compositions: No-Umbrella Blues and Loud Blaw The Frosty Breezes. Many of the arrangements are here!

Sheepfest
The Bridge Singers’ festive recitals in 2016 centred around sheepy music and included in their programmes in Longframlington and Felton, Little Bo-Peep (Hear their performance here), Alison’s K6 Telephone Box (we inserted sheep into the box to make it relevant!) and The Lamb (partnered with Tavener’s setting of the same) , as well as Cheryl's arrangements of Purcell’s Nymphs and Shepherds, Handel’s He Shall Feed his Flock, folk songs “Sheep Crook and Black Dog” and “We Shepherds Are the Best Of Men.” The creative social secretary of the choir, Hazel, adorned Felton Village Hall with appropriate décor too! The Lamb proved popular with the choir and audience and we will reprise it in our summer recitals which will centre around the windows in the village church.
Bridges, Rivers, Village Friends • May 8, 2016
The Bridge Singers had their second recital n St. Michael’s Church in Felton – again to a packed and enthusiastic audience. The title was “Bridges, Rivers and Other Village Friends” and our theme was music and stories related in some way to the village with readings and song. The solemn first half told the story of Oliver Cromwell’s passage through the villages, marching Scottish prisoners south from the 1650 Battle of Dunbar to Durham Cathedral. The 2nd part of the concert was a more light-hearted with a mixture of folk, barbershop, 1960s pop classics and classical pieces. There were also two world premieres of pieces by Cheryl: “The Felton Sycamores” setting a poem written specially for us by Tony Williams, and “Alison’s K6 Telephone Box” about the box on our very own bridge. We also performed a new version of “Magical Glass” with words relating to the village’s glass-making heritage adapted from the original Sunderland version.
The Bridge Singers’ First Recital
The Bridge Singers’ inaugural recital, including every bit of repertoire we currently know, was a sell-out at Felton Village Hall on December 7th 2105! We sang lots of Christmas things, of course, including the world premiere of Cheryl’s Chantry Chapel Carol, but also presented a proper mixture of folk music, barbershop, Dowland songs, excerpts from The Messiah and some short Medieval song bursts.
Magical Glass Recital
In June, 2017 The Bridge Singers presented their Magical Glass recital in St. Michael’s Church, Felton. There were no fewer than four of Cheryl's compositions in it: The world premier of Quiet Window written especially for this concert (read the story here ;
The Lamb; Alison’s K6 Telephone Box; Magical Glass; and several of her arrangements including Gary Steward’s Northumberland, Simon and Garfunkel’s Kathy’s Song, and a couple of spirituals. The concert helped raise money for the church’s window repair fund and was well received in the community. The choir went on to perform much of the popular selection at Feltonbury 2017
on the bridge and Gallery 45, and the more sacred and resonant parts of the programme at Brinkburn Priory in July.
